Body

Body

Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others.

Romans 12:4-5

If you had the opportunity to read yesterday’s devotional, you’ll recall how much I learned about bones as a result of my son’s skateboarding accident. The way God created our bodies to function is truly amazing. The way God created his church body to function is also amazing, which was another thing I learned after Jordan’s accident. When my husband and I became members of College Church in Wheaton less than one week before the incident, we had no idea how much love and support our family would soon receive.

Several hours after Jordan crashed on his skateboard and was admitted to Central DuPage Hospital, our senior pastor made a visit, and for each of the next five days, various pastors from the church stopped by. Jordan received more than fifty cards, many from our church family. Interestingly enough, when he cleaned out his closet this year at the age of seventeen, he still wanted to save all those cards! Our church friends prayed, stopped by with delicious meals, and called on the phone to check up on Jordan. One family even loaned us a hospital bed for the next month while Jordan was unable to go up and down the stairs.

I’ll never forget the way people in my church responded to our needs. As a result of their love, we felt a keen sense of belonging to the body of Christ. We’ve also discovered a sense of belonging that comes with serving others in the body of Christ. God’s designs for his church are wonderful evidences of his care for us.

Father,

Thanks for times when others in your body have reached out to us. Please help us to serve you eagerly by reaching out to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
