For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, eagerness for lustful pleasure, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you and make you unacceptable to God.

Did you know that our hearts push blood around our bodies in a complete circuit more than one thousand times every day? The heart is very complex, beating every minute of every day and night for as long as we live. This small organ, which is really a muscle, keeps our life going by pumping blood that’s needed for each part of our body.

The right atrium of our heart receives dark blood, which is filled with waste (carbon dioxide) from other parts of our body. It is then pushed into the right ventricle, which pumps it into the lungs, where it receives fresh oxygen. The blood returns to the left atrium and flows to the left ventricle, which pumps the fresh red blood throughout the whole body. Then the process repeats.

Just as our physical hearts are involved in cleansing our blood from the waste and impurity of carbon dioxide, our spiritual hearts need to be cleansed from sin. God knows exactly what our hearts are like—dark without his presence and his transforming power. That’s the reason Jesus came to earth—to die for our sin.

In the same way that blood moves around our physical bodies, giving oxygen to each body part and collecting impurities, so must the blood of Jesus Christ cleanse our souls, daily bringing the life of the Spirit to each part of our lives and getting rid of the impurities. We must expose our hearts to God regularly and ask him to fill them. The only thing that can cleanse our hearts from sin is the blood of Jesus.

What can wash away my sin?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

What can make me whole again?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

That makes me white as snow;
