How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!

Isaiah 52:7

This verse from Isaiah is the text for one of my favorite soprano solos from Handel’s Messiah: “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things.”

This peace includes the idea of harmony between God and man, healing of the soul, and the blessings of walking with God. When a person brings peace (or shalom) to another, even her feet are beautiful! How do we keep our feet on a straight path so we can experience peace within our souls and then point our children toward healing and blessing? By following God’s Word.

Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, contains 176 verses. All but five verses speak about God’s Word. The message of the psalm is that if we have God’s Word, we have everything we need for life and godliness. Why? Through the revelation of the New Testament we know it’s because God’s Word points to Christ.

Three of the chapter’s verses speak of feet:

Verse 59 (NIV): “I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.”

Verse 101 (NIV): “I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word.”

Verse 105 (NIV): “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

If we want peace for our souls, and if we want to be the bearer of good news for our children and others around us, we must begin by spending time in God’s Word.

Father,

Thank you for your Word that keeps our feet going in the right direction and allows us to share your good news with others. Amen.
