All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

I am grateful to have grown up in a home where the Word of God was honored and taught. My parents, Sunday school teachers, and youth leaders all treated the Bible with great respect; and as a result, my love for God’s Word has grown through the years.

The New Testament character Timothy, a friend of the apostle Paul, was the son of a Gentile father and a Jewish-Christian mother. In spite of the fact that Timothy’s father was probably not a believer, Timothy was taught the Scriptures from a very young age. His mother and grandmother gave him a great heritage. They not only taught him the truth, but they also guided him into spiritual understanding. The truth led him to a belief that ultimately brought him to salvation in Christ. Truth—faith—salvation. The pattern of Timothy’s family is a pattern for us all.

God’s Word brought Timothy to salvation, but it also provided everything he needed for effective Christian living.

F. B. Meyer writes, “In the stern experiences of life there is no stay that is comparable to the Holy Scriptures. . . . Whatever our need, we can find its solace and remedy here. Thus, we may live a complete life, finding in the Bible resources for all our emergencies.”^a

What experiences of life are you facing today? Spending time in God’s Word will prepare you in every way so that you are equipped for every good thing God wants you to do. The Bible helps transform a new Christian into a mature person in Christ. The longer we live the Christian life, the more we realize our need for God’s Word.

Father,

Thank you for the Bible. Thank you for the example of Timothy’s mother and grandmother, who taught him to love and obey your Word. Please give us wisdom and grace with our children as we do the same. Amen.
