Called To Lead

It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:13, NIV

Jake had a promising future. I could see his potential, but I could also see a hesitancy that didn’t match his ability. I made a commitment to help him develop his skills.

At first Jake’s goals seemed small and unimaginative. I asked him to take some time to set some new goals. The next time we met, Jake’s goals were different but still shortsighted.

I asked him, “Why do you have such small goals? You are a talented, natural leader. Don’t you want to influence other people?”

Jake lowered his head and said, “No, I really don’t.”

“Why?” I exclaimed.

“Because I am afraid they might actually want to follow me.”

Then Jake humbly told me his fears. “My dad was a leader in our church. He taught Sunday school. He led more people to Christ than anyone I know. Then he had an affair and divorced my mom and left a huge number of people disillusioned. I’m capable of doing the same thing.”

Over the next few months, Jake focused on this struggle. He believed that his dad’s influence was greater than the influence of Jesus. Jake had to decide which of those influences would dominate his life.

Jake finally chose to believe that God’s work in his life could overcome his heritage. A young man recently told me, “I am so glad I met Jake. Spending time with him has changed my life and helped me discover God’s purpose for me.” What do you believe about God’s ability to work in your life?
