Beyond Imagination

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory. Ephesians 3:20-21, NIV

Every once in a while, God does something to show you that your life is bigger than you. We are all capable of accomplishing so much in life, but we could use reminders of our need for God and his surpassing resources for doing things we can only dream about.

I saw an example of this when a friend of mine, Brent, went to serve his country in Operation Desert Storm. He was not a pilot dropping smart bombs from a safe distance. He was a foot soldier, marching on the sand into Kuwait City.

One morning Brent was in a bunker with his buddies when they heard the ominous sound of tank treads. Three Iraqi tanks were moving into position around their bunker with their turret guns pointed directly at them. Brent and his comrades were sure they were going to die. Each of them quickly reviewed their lives and asked hard questions about whether they had finished the course they were made to run. They prayed fervently and pleaded with God for mercy.

So Brent and the men with him were utterly surprised when the hatch of each tank opened up and the Iraqi soldiers piled out with their arms held high above their heads. They were desperately tired and hungry. All they wanted was to surrender so they could eat and get some rest.

In a sudden turn of events, disaster was transformed into triumph. God had provided a victory that could not be orchestrated, manipulated, or invented in human terms. He had done what no one had even thought to ask for.

What is going on in your life today that needs God’s intervention?

Lord, when things look bleak in my life, teach me to expect blessings from you beyond what I can even imagine.
