A Defining Moment

When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions about him. John 10:19

Sometimes division over the words of truth can become the most defining moments of our lives.

As an eighteen-year-old college freshman, I felt pretty cocky about my faith in Christ. I honestly believed that I could persuade anyone to respond to the call to know Jesus personally.

I made an appointment with my boss so I could tell him about my faith and give him the opportunity to give his heart to Christ. But I hadn’t counted on my boss being a devout Buddhist. I shared my testimony with him, and he told me about his own religious experience. He spoke with great conviction in his voice. He told me that during his journey to the Orient—where he immersed himself in meditation—he had reached his state of peace.

What my boss told me had my head spinning. I knew there was something wrong in what he had said, but I couldn’t tell what it was. I knew that the Bible was true and that the resurrection of Christ was the dividing point in all human spirituality. But for the first time since I had asked Jesus into my life, I had doubts. I could not fit it all together.

This division between my boss’s beliefs and mine launched me on a journey of discovery. Over time I learned that the Resurrection could be researched and validated historically. I also learned that my boss’s spiritual discovery could not be adequately explained, researched, or validated.

This was a defining moment in my life of faith. I realized that I was not willing to base my eternal destiny on something that could not be validated. And as I studied and learned more about my faith in Christ, I became humbly confident in my ability to explain and defend that faith.

Lord, give me a confident faith that I can boldly share with others who may not believe the way I do.
