Questions

Read Proverbs 2:3-9

Although Kevin had prayed and prayed for his aunt to get well, she didn’t seem to be improving. Seeing him frown, his twin sister, Jodi, asked, “What are you thinking about?”

Kevin hesitated. “About Aunt Brenda,” he said. “I’ve just been wondering if God really hears us when we pray.”

“Of course he does! I can’t believe you’re questioning God,” scolded Jodi. “Better not let Dad hear you do that!”

“Do what?” Dad asked as he joined them. “Come on, you two. Out with it.”

“Well,” muttered Kevin, looking at his feet, “sometimes I don’t understand things about the Bible and about God. I have questions. Jodi says it’s wrong to have questions.”

“It is when they’re about God,” declared Jodi. “Kevin doesn’t think God will answer our prayers about Aunt Brenda.”

“Oh, I see,” said Dad. “Well, actually, it’s okay for Kevin to have questions.”

“It is?” exclaimed the twins.

“Asking questions helps us learn,” explained Dad. “For example, Kevin, you made macaroni and cheese for dinner last night, right?” Kevin nodded. “How did you learn to do that?” asked Dad.

“He asked Mom a ton of questions,” Jodi chimed in. “Like ‘How much water?’ ‘What temperature?’ ‘For how long?’ You saw Mom do it a million times, Kevin, but you didn’t seem to know anything when you tried to do it.”

“Doing it on your own is harder than it looks,” replied Kevin. “But I could do it now.”

Dad nodded. “I bet you could. You’ve watched Mom and me try to follow God and live for him, and you’ve imitated what you’ve seen us do. But as you two start following God yourselves, you may have questions. Don’t be afraid to ask them, even if they’re hard ones. Your questions will help you really know what you believe so you can love and follow God on your own. Now . . . let’s hear your question once again, Kevin. . . .”

Are there things you don’t understand? Times when you wonder if God is there? It’s okay to ask questions. Ask your parents, Sunday school teachers, or any Christian adult you feel you can talk to. Also ask God to help you understand, and look to his Word, the Bible, for answers.
