Science Project (Part 2)

Philippians 1:2-6, 9-11

Eduardo scowled when his mother asked how he enjoyed his Sunday evening youth meeting. “I learned how much more everyone else knows than me,” he mumbled. “I don’t know why I was laughing at Manuel for not knowing anything this morning. I don’t know much more. We played Bible baseball tonight, and I got out every time I was up.”

“Hmmmm,” murmured Mom. “Don’t forget the things we talked about earlier today. You need to apply them when you’re tempted to compare yourself to other people as well as when you’re tempted to judge your friends.” She looked thoughtful as she motioned toward the plants Eduardo was raising for his science project. “Are you disappointed that these plants are so small?” she asked.

Eduardo shrugged. “It doesn’t matter,” he said. “They’re growing well.” He picked up a notebook. “This is the plant growth chart,” he explained. “I write everything down in here—how much I water them and talk to them—stuff like that. I can check here and see how they’ve done over time.”

“That’s a good idea,” approved Mom. She smiled at Eduardo. “Maybe you should try keeping a spiritual growth chart too,” she suggested. “Keep a notebook of some of the things that happen in your life—like how you react when you’re told to do something or when something makes you angry, a special thing God has taught you, your response to a lesson that challenged you—things like that. Then when you wonder how you’re doing, you can check your notebook. That way you can compare yourself to yourself by looking at how you used to behave and how you do now. That would be much better than comparing yourself to others.” SS

How about You?

Do you compare yourself to others? To how they dress? How they act? How much they know? God just wants you to be you. He made you just the way you are and promises to keep working in you. If you feel you must compare yourself to something, look at how far God has brought you.
