Clean Glasses

Psalm 19:7-14

“Brad, please take the dishes out of the dishwasher and put them away,” said his mother one afternoon. “And be sure to check the glasses. I’ve noticed water spots on them lately. If you hold them up to the light, you’ll be able to see if they’re clear or spotted.”

Brad carefully checked each glass in the light from the window. As Mom had mentioned, there were spotted ones. “What should I do with these?” asked Brad.

“If there are spots, just leave them in the dishwasher, and I’ll wash them over again,” replied Mom.

Brad finished his work and was closing the dishwasher when Dad came into the kitchen. “Hold it, Brad,” said Dad. “Put the rest of those glasses away before you quit!”

Brad grinned as he pulled a spotted glass from the dishwasher. “You’re sure I should put these away?” he asked as he held the glass up to the light.

Dad smiled too. “Hmmmm,” he murmured as he put down his newspaper. “Son, you just made a good point about something.”

“What’s that, Dad?” asked Brad.

“If we’re not sure if a glass is clean or dirty, we hold it up to the light to find out,” replied Dad. “And if we aren’t sure whether something we want to do is right or wrong—if the activity is ‘clean’ or ‘spotted’—we should hold it up to the light of God’s Word. We should see what the Bible says to help us make the right decision. If it looks good when God’s truth shines on it, then we can believe it’s good.”

“Which means we’ve got to know God’s truth really well, right?” said Brad.
