Blind Leaders

1 John 4:1-6

“But, Mom,” argued Marisela, “what’s wrong with joining that club? They just play games and do crafts. And they help poor children, too. Some of my Christian friends have joined. After all, it’s a church club. Does it matter that it’s not our church?”

“It isn’t a church, Marisela,” answered Mom. “It’s a cult. The leaders and teachers don’t believe that Jesus is God, or that he died for the sins of the world and rose again. I understand they include a lesson time at the club, and that’s the kind of false teaching you would hear.”

“Oh, Mom,” protested Marisela, “I know better than to believe that stuff. I’ll just go for the fun times and the volunteering projects.”

“Don’t be so sure of yourself,” said Mom. She paused, then added, “Let me tell you a true story. When I was young, some friends and I decided to explore some trails in the woods behind our house. I thought I knew those woods so well that I could never get lost, but before we knew it, we were lost. I was relieved when Sonya, one of the other girls, said she knew the way back home. So she led the way, but you know what? She just led us farther and farther into the woods. The sun went down, and we wandered around in the dark. We weren’t rescued until the next day.”

“How awful!” exclaimed Marisela.

Mom nodded and smiled. “When my father found us, he quoted something Jesus said: ‘If one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.’ Marisela, unsaved teachers are ‘blind’—they can’t understand Scripture. They will lead you astray.”

Marisela sighed. “Okay,” she agreed. She grinned at her mother. “I don’t want to fall into any ditches!” MRP

Are you careful about what kind of Bible teachers you listen to? Beware of those who deny any part of God’s Word. Be sure your teachers believe and teach that all of God’s Word is true.
