Who Are You Going to Call?

Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.

Acts 2:21

For our daughter Isabelle’s second birthday, my husband and I bought her a toddler bed to make the crib available for our three-month-old son. When Isabelle opened her present, she was overjoyed and climbed right in, snuggling up to her new pillow and bedspread. The joy lasted until later that night, when she realized she actually had to sleep there.

Her first nap in the new bed was no easy task either. The girl who usually went down for a nap without a peep resisted. A few minutes after leaving the room, my husband and I heard her cry, “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!”

Then, a few minutes later, she switched to “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!”

These we expected. What we did not expect was her next line of attack. “Nelda! Nelda! Nelda!” she called out.

My husband and I looked at each other. “Is she saying what I think she’s saying?” I asked, and we both started laughing.

Nelda is Isabelle’s great-aunt, who lives more than seven hundred miles away. Nelda was fresh in Isabelle’s mind because she had sent a present for Isabelle’s birthday. So when Mommy and Daddy did not answer quickly enough, Isabelle was willing to call on anyone she could think of who might be able to help her.

Aren’t you thankful to be the child of a Father who is near enough to answer when you call? And aren’t you glad he loves you so much that he wants to answer you every time you ask? Our God is so compassionate and good.

Father God, thank you that you hear me when I call and are close enough to answer when I cry out to you. Forgive me when I seek anyone other than you to save me. Amen.
