Which Came First?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. . . . God said, . . . “Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.”

Which came first—the chicken or the egg? How many times have you heard that discussed through the years? Seemingly, though, no one can come to any conclusion.

Recently a story appeared in London’s Daily Express with the title “The Chicken Came Before the Egg, Researchers Discover.” The story noted that researchers at the University of Sheffield and the University of Warwick had actually found that a protein called ovocleidin-17 (OC17), produced in a pregnant hen’s ovaries, is crucial to the formation of eggshells. From this discovery they concluded that the chicken had to have come first. The statement that made me giggle, though, was, “However, the research does not come up with how the protein-producing chicken existed in the first place.” I can just hear God saying, “Gotcha!”

I am convinced that God allows “great scientists” to discover what they consider new facts and findings, which consistently verify what the Bible has said all along. And it seems the further we get from Creation and Bible times, the more dramatic the findings are.

For instance, a few years ago archaeologists unearthed a great ancient library. And while we sometimes think people in those times were not as well educated as we are, that library contained more than ten thousand volumes in seven different languages.

One day I believe those persistent explorers of the Mountains of Ararat in Turkey will actually find Noah’s Ark. When they do, I wonder how the scientists will explain it away?

The Bible says, “God created the heavens and the earth.” Since that’s true, it seems to me that he would be able to write an accurate book about it. Perhaps the scientists should just learn to read. You think?
