The Worst Way

People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7

The fancy holiday party was in full swing, with the cream of society in attendance. Classy ball gowns, flashy jewelry, tuxedos, and top hats filled the hall. The food had been prepared by one of the top caterers in Washington, DC, and the orchestra was playing all the latest hits. The evening promised to sparkle and glimmer with success.

Couples meandered here and there—some wandering onto the veranda to watch the moon come up over the Potomac, others sitting quietly at small tables talking about politics and kids, and yet others dancing to the music in the ballroom.

Several women sat at a round table, admiring the splendid decor, the holiday decorations, and the wonderful music. Eventually, a tall, none-too-handsome young man approached the table and spoke to one of the ladies.

“Miss Todd, I should like to dance with you in the worst way,” he said quietly. “May I have this dance?”

Taking his outstretched hand, she rose, saying, “Certainly, sir. I would be honored.”

After negotiating a few clumsy circuits of the room with the tall, ungainly man, Mary was deposited back in her seat, surrounded by her giggling friends.

“Thank you so much, Miss Todd,” said the man politely as he turned to leave.

One of the women at the table, grinning at Mary, asked, “Well, Mary, did he dance with you in the worst way?”

“Yes,” replied Mary, “in the worst way.”

Surprisingly, though, through the years Mary Todd danced many dances with the man who eventually became her husband and the president of the United States—Abraham Lincoln.

As my mother would say, “Handsome is as handsome does.” Mr. Lincoln was greatly admired around the world for his actions, if not for his unique appearance.

I pray, dear Father, that you will find my heart pure and focused on you when you examine it. Thank you for looking beyond my outer self to my inner self. Amen.
