The All-Seeing Eye

Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.

My friend Lee Nelson is a funeral director. Since my dad also worked in the funeral business for many years, Lee and I often swap stories.

One day Lee was working with a family where the mother had died. He described them as “not very sophisticated.” They were making final arrangements for her service. During the interview Lee asked the daughter, “Do you have a piece of jewelry or something you would like to put on your mother during the funeral service? We would, of course, remove it before the interment.”

The daughter nodded and began digging around in her purse, saying, “Yes, yes, I have something Mom would want to wear.” She finally held her closed hand toward Lee, who held out his open hand to receive the item. When she took her hand away, Lee was holding the dead woman’s glass eye.

Lee quietly placed the eye on his desk and said, “Would you please excuse me for a moment?” And he left the office. Then he walked to the receptionist’s desk, laughing his head off, and told her and his boss what had happened. He said it took him about ten minutes to finally get control of himself so he could return to the office and finish the interview.

Just as Lee reached his office door, his boss called out to him, “Lee, wait!” Coming to Lee, he asked, “Did they tell you what their mom’s last words were?”

“No, they didn’t,” said Lee.

“I’ll be keeping an eye out for you!”

Lee said it was another ten minutes before he could get his act together to go back into his office and face the family.
