Are we there yet?” If you are a parent, you have probably heard those words repeated over and over from little voices in the backseat on vacations and trips. I confess that I am not much better. As my mother often says, “I’d like to just be able to wiggle my nose, like Samantha on Bewitched, and be there.”

One older woman, on her way to a summer resort, kept pestering the train conductor to tell her when they reached Ellenville. Finally, harried by her frequent questioning, he pleaded with her to bother him no more and promised he would tell her as soon as they reached the town.

Becoming busy with all his duties, the conductor forgot all about the elderly woman until the train had reached and passed Ellenville. Suddenly recollecting her anxiety about the place, he reversed the train, and as it backed into the little station, he hurried to find the woman and told her, “Here you are now—in Ellenville. I’ll help you with your baggage.”

“Oh, thank you,” she replied. “But I’m not getting off here. My daughter told me that when I got to Ellenville, it would be just about time to take another of my pills.”

Life, too, is a long road trip of sorts. And we’re the kids in the backseat, with God in the driver’s seat. The destination is heaven, and I can hardly wait to get there, because I know it will be fabulous. As the old hymn says so well, “This world is not my home; I’m just a’passin’ through.”

I don’t know about you, but I look out the window at the unfolding scenery of life, and sometimes I want to ask, “Hey, Dad, are we there yet?”

Abba, Father, we are in your hands and in your care, and we know you will bring us safely to your home in heaven. Thank you for loving us, Lord. Amen.
