I Love to Tell the Story

I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters.I will praise you among your assembled people.

Psalm 22:22

My three-year-old son loves to make up elaborate stories. He often entertains his sisters and friends with tall tales featuring monsters, superheroes, and various cartoon characters.

On the way to his preschool the other day, he told me a story that went something like this:

“Once upon a time, there was a big castle. And on the top floor lived a prince who had a blue room and a Lightning McQueen bed. One day, the prince said, ‘Today, I’ll invite my friend Landry to go bowling with me!’ So he went down the elevator and got his dinosaur.

“But on his way to Landry’s house, he ran into a big monster! It was green with yellow spots all over it. The prince said, ‘Get out of here, you yucky monster!’ And the monster got scared and ran away.

“Then the prince got to his friend’s house. Landry rode back to the castle with the prince, where they went bowling. And they won! So they had a big party and invited all their friends and danced and ate lots of ice cream. The end.”

I have to admit, my son’s fanciful tales are some of the wackiest things I have ever heard. And he loves to tell them—over and over.

But the most far-fetched tale of all has the ring of truth to it. It is an old, old story we never get tired of hearing. And it is a story we love to tell—over and over.

I love to tell the story, ’twill be my theme in glory,

To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.
