Football In Heaven?
Football in Heaven?
I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared.
Revelation 21:1
Two buddies, George and Harvey, were avid football fans. They watched, played, and talked about football endlessly. As we say in the South, “They were ate up with it.” They attended more than fifty games each year—Pee Wee games, high school games, university games, and every pro game they could get to. They were so dedicated to the sport they even agreed that the one who died first would try to let the other one know if there was football in heaven.
After watching a Dallas Cowboys victory one night in October, George passed away in his sleep. His wife said he went peacefully, with a smile on his face, because the Cowboys had won that night.
Harvey was terribly upset and really missed his football buddy. About a week later, Harvey was awakened by what he thought was George’s voice, saying, “Hut one, hut two, Harvey!”
Harvey sat up and ventured, “Hey, George, is that you?”
“Yes, it’s me,” replied the eerie-sounding voice.
“Wow! I can’t believe you actually came back. I really miss you, buddy.”
“Right. Well, this is harder than you might think,” said George.
“Okay, I understand. So tell me, is there football in heaven?”
“Well, Harvey, I have some good news and some bad news for you. Which do you want first?”
“I guess the good news.”
“The good news is that, yes, there is football in heaven. And it’s amazing! Nobody ever misses a catch. The kicker never misses a field goal. And, oh yeah, the cheerleaders are real angels.”
“That sounds great, George! So what’s the bad news?”
“You’re playing quarterback tomorrow night.”
Like George and Harvey, I think we will all be surprised at what we find in heaven. God loves surprises!
O Lord, thank you for the promise of heaven and the gift of living with you for all eternity. I am so grateful for your saving grace and love. Amen.
