Expecting the Worst

Let us come to him with thanksgiving.Let us sing psalms of praise to him.

Psalm 95:2

The day before Thanksgiving, Jena prepared her first full Thanksgiving meal, turkey and all, for her family. Since they would be spending the next day with extended family, she wanted to have a special day just for them. Jena had never demonstrated a great talent for cooking, so the idea of her preparing a turkey on her own raised her husband’s and son’s eyebrows. Although they expected the worst, they still encouraged her to give it a try.

Early that morning she stuffed and basted the turkey and put it in the oven. She had read everything she could about the proper way to do it, and she was sure she had the timing just right. Surprisingly, everything went well, and she had the entire meal ready at the stroke of noon.

Knowing her own history as a cook, though, before she served the meal, she announced to her husband and son, “I know this is the first turkey I’ve ever cooked. If it isn’t any good, I don’t want anybody to say a word. We’ll just get up from the table without comment and go out to a restaurant to eat.” Then she returned to the kitchen.

When she entered the dining room, proudly bearing the beautifully browned turkey, she found her husband and son gone. She finally discovered them sitting in the car in the driveway with the engine running. Obviously they had very little faith in her ability!

At times we are like that about God. We have problems in life, and we pray to him for help. Then we sit back with resignation and expect the worst. We just do not seem to have much faith in him. But based on my own experience, I can say that when we exercise a little faith, we learn that no one else is as unfailingly faithful as the Lord!

Dear God, you have always been there for me, no matter what kind of trouble I get myself into. Thank you for saving me from my own foolishness. Amen.
