Delivering the U.s. Mail

There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

As a college student I worked in the campus post office. And during the summer, I landed a special student job at the post office in my hometown. My job was to drive a truck carrying special-delivery letters, CODs, and the like. When I finished those jobs, I delivered ordinary parcels to downtown businesses. So I was running all over town every day.

I was something of a novelty there. That was in the late 1960s, and in those days very few women worked in the postal system. If they did, they typically worked the customer service windows inside the post office, selling stamps and money orders. They were rarely seen walking a route or driving a postal truck. So people often did a double take when they saw me whizzing down the street in my red-white-and-blue van.

I took a lot of teasing from the mail carriers, but I didn’t mind because it was a much better paying job than anything else I could have gotten. So I just teased right back, and we all had a good laugh.

Every day I met my friend Emily for lunch. She was still in high school, but we had a lot of fun together. One day while we were eating, someone tampered with my truck. Of course, damaging a postal vehicle was a federal crime, punishable by a large fine or even imprisonment. So when I discovered the result of someone’s mischief, I did not know whether to laugh or panic.

On the side of the truck where it had said “U.S. Mail,” someone crossed out “Mail” and written “Femail.”

Fortunately, in God’s system there is no distinction about who can be saved—mail or femail!
