Camels

“I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11

One of my favorite quotations is from Isaac Bashevis Singer: “Life is God’s novel. Let him write it.” And it seems to me that life would run a lot better if each of us could only do what God, in his great wisdom, planned for us to do.

For instance, a mother camel and her offspring were talking one day when the young camel asked, “Mom, why do I have these huge three-toed feet?”

The mother replied, “Well, Son, when we trek across the desert, your toes will help you stay on top of the soft sand.”

“Okay,” said the son.

A few minutes later, the son asked, “Mom, why do I have these great long eyelashes?”

“They are there to keep the sand out of your eyes on the trips through the desert.”

“Thanks, Mom,” replied the son.

After a short while, the son returned and asked, “Mom, why do I have these great big humps on my back?”

The mother, now a little impatient with all the boy’s questions, replied, “They are there to help us store water for our treks across the desert so we can go without drinking for long periods of time and not get thirsty.”

“That’s great, Mom. So we have huge feet to stop us from sinking into the sand, long eyelashes to keep the sand out of our eyes, and these humps to store water for long trips in the desert, right?”

“Yes, Son, that’s right.”

“Well, then, why in the world are we living in the San Diego Zoo?”

Father, I’m thankful that you already know the path I am on. Please help me to follow your lead and trust that you know what is best. Amen.
