I don’t know about you, but I am always astounded at how God comes into our lives. It is not often with a shout and a thundering roar. Rather, he comes as a gentle breeze, a whisper, or a butterfly on gossamer wings. He kisses us on the cheek with his soft breath, showing us his faithful love and tender care. It is a mystery we do not often grasp or see.

Don’t get me wrong, I know he can thunder and scare the daylights out of us when he needs to, but somehow I think he saves that for occasions when we’re really hardheaded and have refused to listen and hear. Most of the time, I think, his approach is quiet and comforting or surprising and unexpected, as it was with my friend Nancy.

At a church care-group dinner one night, several women were sitting around the table talking about women’s issues—husbands, grandkids, menopause, and breast cancer.

Nancy said she had discovered her breast cancer in an unusual way. She was lying on her back on the sofa when her cat hopped onto the sofa at her feet and proceeded to walk up her body. When the cat stepped on Nancy’s breast, Nancy screamed with pain. A visit to the doctor resulted in a diagnosis of cancer, the treatment for which ultimately saved Nancy’s life.

Several women commented about the surprising way Nancy had found the deadly disease and discussed how blessed she was to have found it in time.

“It was a miracle!” Nancy said with finality.

“What miracle?” I asked. “It was just a simple cat scan!”

Father, thank you for the marvelous ways you touch our lives and actively lead us. Help us never to forget that you are there for us every day and every hour. Amen.
