WHEN MICHAEL JORDAN returned to professional basketball with the Washington Wizards after a 40-month absence, no one knew exactly what to expect. But in Jordan’s first game, the New York Knicks discovered times had changed.

The Wizards opened the 2001–02 season against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden before a sellout crowd of 19,763. Although Jordan still wore number 23, he could no longer dominate contests like he used to.

Washington played well in the first half and led 43–41 at the break. But the Knicks regrouped. Latrell Sprewell’s three-pointer put New York in front 84–83 with a little under four minutes to play. The Knicks upped the lead to 89–86 with 1:43 to go.

Two free throws by New York’s Othella Harrington made the score 91–88 with 34 seconds on the clock. On Washington’s next possession, Jordan tried a lob pass that Kurt Thomas intercepted. But Thomas lost the ball on the dribble, and the Wizards passed to Jordan for a wide-open 3-point shot on the wing. His attempt clanged off the rim, and Thomas rebounded. Drawing a foul, Thomas made two free throws to clinch a 93–91 Knicks victory.

POINT Ask people to name the top ten NBA players of all time, and most include Michael Jordan on their list. Narrow the selections to five, and Michael Jordan’s name usually still appears. Some would even place him at No. 1. But time changes things. After three years away from his sport, he no longer connected on every key shot.

Things change; it’s a fact. Kings, presidents, and other rulers lose power. Some people gain wisdom and discernment. But only God has the power to make times and seasons change. Only God brings rulers in and out of power. Only God offers wisdom and discernment. The prophet Daniel learned that and praised the Lord.
