Ty Tryon’s Father

TY TRYON’S FATHER started giving his son golf instruction at age three. In 2001, the years of practice and hard work reaped dividends as Ty earned a Professional Golfers’ Association playing card.

The junior at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, competed in the PGA’s annual qualifying school at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach. The top 35 finishers received memberships, granting them entry into PGA-sponsored tournaments for the following year.

After five rounds of the six-round event, Tryon stood three shots away from 35th place. But on the final day, he carded a 66 and vaulted 27 spots into a tie for 23rd, just nine strokes in back of top finisher Pat Perez. The 17-year-old golfer, who began studying under the tutelage of golf guru David Leadbetter at age seven, posted an 18-under-par 414 in his six rounds.

Unfortunately, the previous September the PGA Tour had adopted a new policy requiring players to be 18 for full membership. Tryon, who turned 18 on June 2, was permitted to play in 12 tournaments prior to his birthday before gaining full playing privileges.

POINT Ty Tryon most likely would never have qualified for the PGA Tour at age 17 if he hadn’t begun playing golf as a toddler. Consistent lessons and constant practice paid great rewards. His game became second nature and part of his everyday life.

That’s what God wants us to do with the Bible. He desires that we consistently learn and constantly search through his Word. The Lord asks that we keep verses near us, teach them to children, talk about them wherever we are, and think of them every waking moment.

Then his Word will be hidden in our heart and mind.

GOAL! Write down a special verse on a separate piece of paper. Fold the paper several times and keep it in your pocket as a reminder. Recite the verse each time you touch the paper until you memorize the words. Then begin with another passage. Praise God for fixing his Word in your heart and mind.
