SPORTSWRITERS TABBED wide receiver R. C. Owens “Alley Oop” because of his leaping catches. But in 1962, Owens demonstrated his jumping ability also worked on defense.

For years, the 6-foot-3-inch athlete attempted to convince the San Francisco 49ers coaches he could block field goals using a unique method. Owens would stand beneath the goalpost, time his leap, and bat the ball aside like a basketball player blocking a shot. However, San Francisco’s staff never permitted him to try his idea in a game.

Following a trade to the Baltimore Colts, Owens earned the opportunity to put his plan into practice. During the first quarter in a game against the Washington Redskins at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, Bobby Khayat attempted a 43-yard field goal. Sensing the proper moment, Colts coach Weeb Ewbank stationed Owens under the goalposts. As Khayat’s kick tapered downward, Owens eyed the ball, leaped above the ten-foot crossbar, and swatted the ball to the ground. Everyone sat in stunned disbelief.

The Colts went on to win the game 34–21 as Johnny Unitas completed a personal best 25-of-36 passes for 367 yards in the contest.

POINT After the San Francisco coaches rejected R. C. Owens’s field-goal–blocking idea, Alley Oop didn’t give up and made his leaping pay off. Colts coach Weeb Ewbank gave the receiver an opportunity to succeed—and he did. And after his historic block, R. C. Owens leapt in celebration.

Like Owens, many of us find our ideas rejected. Some people may even poke fun at us. Jesus Christ told his followers to expect rejection, exclusion, and insults for their faith. But one day they would leap for joy.

Sometimes we’re rejected, excluded, and insulted for our faith too. When that happens, we need to remember our reward will be in heaven if not on earth.
