No Professional Seems To Enjoy

NO PROFESSIONAL SEEMS TO ENJOY playing golf more than Shigeki Maruyama. But in the 2002 Verizon Byron Nelson Classic, the Japanese player had even more reason to smile.

Maruyama led by three strokes as the tournament entered its final day. Despite maintaining his margin, Maruyama struggled on the back nine with the muggy weather conditions and lack of wind.

After hitting out of a bunker on hole No. 10 and getting an unexpected birdie, he pulled his next drive into the water and needed an outstanding pitch to save a bogey. Maruyama also missed the green on 12 but made an 18-foot putt to record a par. He saved another par on 14 with a 9-footer.

Ben Crane, playing in the group ahead, staged a mini-rally. The 26-year-old rookie carded an eagle on 16, a birdie on 17, and a par on 18 to finish at a 12-under-par.

Maruyama’s tee shot on 17 barely cleared the water. But the golfer (nicknamed “the Smilin’ Assassin”) chipped four feet from the hole to remain two shots ahead. After making a routine par on the final hole, he thrust his arms into the air and bowed to host Byron Nelson. For the day, Maruyama finished with a 68, giving him the tournament title at 14-under-par.
