New Sports Seem To Pop Up

NEW SPORTS SEEM TO POP UP all the time. With the creation of every new sport, more and more athletes get the chance to showcase their skills. And while Aleisha Cline may have had some previous notoriety, she certainly made a name for herself in the Skier X competition at the X Games.

From 1999 to 2002, Cline won the wild-looking event three out of four years. Skier X pits athletes together racing down a mountain. However, unlike many skiing events, racers compete at the same time to see who reaches the finish line first. With multiple athletes jockeying for position on the jumps, bumps, and tight turns, the audience can expect a lot of excitement . . . and a few spills.

At the 2002 X Games, Cline showed she possessed all the skills to remain at the top of the sport. Everybody already knew she wasn’t afraid of skiing fast. Cline earned an Olympic berth in the 1992 Winter Games in speed skiing. Her clocking of 135 mph ranked her as the fastest in North America and the second fastest in the world. However, she gave up the sport in 1994. With the women’s Skier X event added to the X Games in 1999, Cline found her niche and won the competition’s first gold medal.

Then in the 2002 competition, Cline demonstrated her patience and high-flying abilities to win top honors again. Without an early gap to shoot, Cline stayed in the back of the pack. But by the fourth hit, she flew into the lead. Cline never looked back and won her third Skier X gold.
