Most Exciting Launch

(Read 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18)

Jana was glad when her father was transferred to a town only 25 miles from the Kennedy Space Center. She was excited one night when a launch was to take place, because her father had promised to wake her shortly before the liftoff time. Jana could think of nothing else as she went to bed, but she finally drifted off to sleep.

The next thing Jana knew, Dad was bending over her and calling her name. Jana sat up quickly. Then, putting on her robe, she followed her father outside to a spot where they’d be able to see the bright light from the launch pad.

“I’m glad they’re doing a night launch!” exclaimed Jana. “And just think how great it would be to go up—that would really be exciting!” As she spoke, a yellow light appeared, suddenly brightening the entire sky. “Is that it?” Jana wanted to know, just a little disappointed that it wasn’t more striking.

Dad shook his head. “No, just keep looking in that . . .”

Before her father could finish what he was saying, Jana called out, “There she is, Dad! Just like a big ball of fire!” They stood watching as long as the red spot was in view. When it disappeared into the clouds, they returned to the house. “Wow! I wouldn’t have wanted to miss that for anything,” said Jana.

“I’m glad you got to see it, too,” agreed Dad. He put an arm around Jana’s shoulder as he added, “Being out here and watching the sky reminds me of another, even more exciting launch I don’t want either one of us to miss.”

“The next launch?” Jana asked. “Will that one be more exciting?”

Dad smiled. “It could be the next one or it could happen later than that,” he said. “I’m thinking of the time when Jesus will come and take those who love him to be with him in heaven. Will you be ready for that event?” Dad asked.

Jana slowly shook her head. “I’m not sure,” she admitted, “but I don’t want to miss it either.” Together Jana and her father talked about how to prepare for eternity, and Jana was glad she had already asked Christ to be her Savior. RIJ
