Read Proverbs 16

The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.

Proverbs 16:21

Do you remember the first time that you read the words of Jesus? Do you remember the thrill of reading something that you knew deep down in your heart was absolutely, eternally true? Throughout the Bible, it is experiences with this absolute Truth, the Creator of the world, that drive the changes in people’s lives, make leaders out of the most unlikely people, and shape the fate of nations.

True wisdom can come only from God—through praying, having quiet times, reading his Word, and earnestly seeking his will. But most of all, wisdom will come from an attitude of service and obedience. No amount of Bible study or church activity can cover up our hearts before God. He can bless us only when we are genuinely seeking to follow him.

God also uses some of his followers as teachers and leaders, who must pass on their understanding to others. They have a responsibility to seek God’s wisdom first and foremost because they are teaching not what they know, but what they have been taught by God. Presentation is important too. When the words are pleasant, instruction is appreciated and taken to heart. And when the source is truth, instruction is not just appreciated, but actively sought.
