Verbal Refreshment

Verbal Refreshment

Read Proverbs 18

Wise words are like deep waters; wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook.

Proverbs 18:4

Did Jesus have this proverb in mind as he watched the woman approach the well in Samaria (John 4:6)? Perhaps. He told her that his words were life-giving water (John 4:14). Did Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well have the refreshing effect promised in this proverb? It certainly did.

What a transformation! The woman went from being the town outcast to being an outspoken evangelist. Her message? “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” (John 4:29). Jesus’ words had shown her that he really knew her and her needs. They also conveyed his care and his ability to meet her needs. She became a “bubbling brook” that drew others to taste Jesus’ life-giving water (John 4:39-42). We can have the same effect on others as we experience daily intimacy with Jesus.
