Read Proverbs 18

Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.

Proverbs 18:13

At some point in our lives we’ve all rushed to give advice without listening to the complete story. On the other end of the spectrum, almost everyone has had the misfortune of receiving advice before being allowed to finish explaining first. This proverb encourages us to rein in our tongues and listen more carefully than we usually do. It is then easier to give accurate and helpful advice and avoid the pitfalls of pride.

Why is this true? Often when we speak too quickly, the advice we give turns out to be the first thing the person has already tried. Listening can help us realize how little help we have to offer and remind us to ask for wisdom and help from God on behalf of our friend. Waiting to hear the whole story is itself the action our friend needs the most from us. Our attention conveys care and concern in ways we can’t measure.

Listening avoids a lot of pointless repetition.

Today, Lord, I want to hear all the facts before passing judgment. Help me to rein in my tongue and focus on listening to other people.
