The Vow That Refreshes

The Vow That Refreshes

Read Proverbs 5

Drink water from your own well—share your love only with your wife.

Proverbs 5:15

The idea of comparing drinking water with marital love is most certainly an image sent from God to the author of this proverb. After all, who better than God would know that, just as water refreshes us and even sustains our life, fidelity within marriage refreshes and sustains. In addition, just as there is no true substitute for water—despite all the colas, sports drinks, and simulated fruit juices—all other sexual relationships are impostors compared to that of husband and wife.

God loves the very concept of marriage and wants us to know that any other coupling is far from his best. He wants us to experience his best for each of us. We must never settle for imitation sex or even compromise another person’s marriage. Let us concentrate on and be thankful for what and whom God has provided to each of us.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Grown-up love is faithful.

God, help me to hold on to your view of marriage. Give me strength to be faithful to you and, if it is your will that I marry, to the spouse you give to me.
