Staying On The Wagon - The One Year Daily Wisdom

Staying On The Wagon

Read Proverbs 23

Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags.

Proverbs 23:20-21

Lust, greed, power, money, laziness, self-righteousness, anger, and avarice—these are all things on which we can gorge ourselves. They may not be as obvious to others as the overconsumption of alcohol or food, but they are equally bad because they take control away from the Holy Spirit. And when we grab the steering wheel away from the Holy Spirit, it’s going to result in a car wreck—guaranteed.

Yes, drinking too much liquor will eventually lead to bankruptcy, but too much greed, anger, lust, or laziness will also bankrupt us spiritually, taking us out of the presence of God. Although it’s easy to point our fingers at those we know who are struggling deeply with such sins, we are fooling ourselves if we ignore the times we indulge ourselves as well. But though there may be pleasure in sin for a time, it always ends. Furthermore, when we get away from the presence of God, we can’t be moving forward at the same time. We come to a dead halt spiritually. No more building up treasures in heaven, no more being used by God here on earth, no more anything. And unless we turn back, we will face spiritual poverty.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Gluttony, drunkenness, and laziness add up to poverty.

Today, Lord, help me to identify the places in my life where I am most in danger of overindulging my sinful heart. Keep me from temptation, and help me to keep the Holy Spirit firmly in control of my life.
