Spotlighting Fools

Read Proverbs 12

The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness.

Proverbs 12:23

You may not notice a genius standing in a crowded room, but it won’t take long to zero in on a fool. According to this proverb, a fool announces his poor judgment simply by the nature of his words. This proverb implies the arrogance of a fool who throws words in people’s faces. The wise are not being smug by holding their tongues; they are refusing to parade their knowledge before others. Wise people choose their words carefully. Unlike the wise, however, the foolish run out of words to say, but continue to babble.

The difference between a wise person and a fool is the ability to have quiet confidence. For example, Jesus did not need to advertise his knowledge. He simply spoke and acted wisely, and people noticed.

The tongue controls the entire body, and therefore can be a dangerous weapon or a helpful tool. We direct our speech not so much by deciding when to speak, but when to be quiet. Only then will people notice our wisdom—and it won’t take a word from us to tell them.
