Sharing A Piece Of His Fruit
Read Proverbs 27
As workers who tend a fig tree are allowed to eat the fruit, so workers who protect their employer’s interests will be rewarded.
Proverbs 27:18
God has chosen us to take care of the world and to tell people about Christ. God’s promise in Proverbs 27:18 applies to us when we are faithful with the jobs we are given. God is the employer; we are the workers.
In a broad sense, Christians are called to be stewards of the world. We are allowed to eat its fruit, to enjoy many good things. We must never forget, however, that the world is not our eternal home, nor does it ultimately belong to us. Part of our duty is to “protect” our “employer’s interests.” God also grants to us individual jobs that are unique to our capabilities and talents.
There is a sense of justice in this proverb. God knows how well we are performing and how much we will be rewarded. The proverb is an invitation to work with him and share in his goodness. It is extraordinary that God offers to reward us. As servants of the Master of Creation, humans should be ready to serve him for nothing. But he chooses to let us enjoy his benefits, to eat his fruit though we could never work enough to truly deserve it.
A WORD FOR TODAY
God blesses those who work for him.
Today, Lord, I will be aware of my responsibilities. I will serve you and realign my focus to your purposes.
