Pure In Heart

Read Proverbs 24

God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

Matthew 5:8

When we picture a person whose heart is pure, we may easily picture a small child or an adult who has led a quiet, sheltered life. We smile fondly. Yet look at the reward that Jesus promises to such an individual: to see God! Does this mean that the Mighty One of the universe will make a personal appearance, rather like a celebrity making a visit to the pediatrics ward of a hospital? Or is the vision of God, rather, the ability to see him around us?

We cannot know exactly what Jesus had in mind that day up on the mountainside, when what came to be known as the Beatitudes began what came to be called the Sermon on the Mount. We can be certain only that the presence of God abounds nearby and within a person whose heart has been made pure by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus. God indeed blesses them . . . and this blessing can be ours.

A WORD FOR TODAY

We see God most clearly through pure hearts.

Today, Lord, I offer you my heart. I want it to be pure for you, for I want to see you.
