Read Proverbs 15
Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!
Proverbs 15:23
Ann Landers, a popular advice columnist until her death in 2002, had nothing on Proverbs—the ultimate daily column. Her millions of readers, however, proved this truth: Everyone loves to give advice. By her own testimony, she received a sizable volume of letters from people who were not seeking advice. They were giving it, and doing so in abundance. Apparently for every printed reply to a problem, her readers offered their own version. Even so, her daily task was to attempt to say the right thing at the right time.
Though it is unlikely that we will ever see our words read by millions, this proverb reminds us of the value of a well-said word. We must ask God’s help in choosing our timing as well as our words. Many people feel they often don’t know what to say when a friend is hurting or in need of advice. However, God extols us to say the right thing at the right time—and promises his help in doing so. We won’t do it perfectly every time, but we will get better the more we do it.
A WORD FOR TODAY
There is pleasure in wise counsel.
Today, Lord, give me the right things to say at the right times. May you be pleased in all I say.
