Read Proverbs 26

God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

Matthew 5:10

Like wearing rival colors at our alma mater’s home football game, the Bible teaches that godliness is countercultural, often resulting in persecution. We can be thankful that the typical Western experience of persecution is not life threatening, but it remains uncomfortable; aggravating; and, at times, lonely. We may be ostracized from social events because of our faith. We may undergo criticism for upholding standards for our children—sometimes even within our own ranks. Persecution in the workplace may mean being passed over for promotions. Amid all our persecution, God’s promise is his presence and power.

Like a medal of honor, the Kingdom of Heaven is a reward for such endurance. However, just as veterans alone know the true value of a medal of honor, we will realize the truth of this verse only if we experience it. The goal is not a higher rating on the persecution meter. Rather, we should be concerned only with how overtly we live out our faith.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Endurance is a test of Kingdom citizenship.

Today, Lord, there are those who don’t understand what I am about. Encourage me with a spirit of rejoicing whenever I am misunderstood.
