Listen Up

Read Proverbs 12

Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.

Proverbs 12:15

This verse has been taken many ways—with varying results. At face value, this could mean that a teenager who listens to the advice of his friends to try drugs is actually considered wise. Obviously, the principle here goes far deeper, concerning both attitude and discernment. Foolish people think their own way is right. They think they need no advice, and so they refuse to listen to anyone who might have experience, knowledge, or even just loving concern for them. They foolishly limit their ability to make good decisions.

“The wise listen to others” means that these people are able to discern to whom they should listen as well as the wisdom of the advice offered. God often does speak to us through other people, and so wise people should seek counsel from others whom they respect as spiritually sensitive. Wise people then can consider the advice and experience of others as they continue to seek God’s guidance.

The wise pay attention.

Lord, I ask you to show me how I should seek advice. Reveal to me the people who can give wise advice. Teach me how to discern and use the counsel I receive. Help me to grow and learn so that I can give good counsel to others who have need.
