Dressed To Kill

Read Proverbs 7

The woman approached him, seductively dressed and sly of heart.

Proverbs 7:10

The mantra on Madison Avenue is, and seemingly always has been, “Sex sells.” Take any product—makeup, milk, even mufflers—and showcase it with gorgeous models in sensual settings. The formula works like a charm. Like moths to the flame, we are foolishly attracted. Hey, this isn’t rocket science—seductive things are meant to seduce!

In Proverbs 7, Solomon tells the sad story of a young man who encounters a seductive woman. She is attractive, alluring, and dressed (literally) to kill. This temptress is the epitome of style and fashion. She has “the look.”

Because this man is “naive”—he lacks the wisdom to look beyond the surface or see beyond the moment—he ends up as willing prey in the trap of this adulterous woman—“like a stag caught in a trap . . . like a bird flying into a snare.” And our fate is likely the same whenever we become enamored with eroticism.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Don’t be surprised by temptation.

Today, Lord, I need to be careful about the images I see and dwell upon. Grant me the wisdom to see beneath the surface and beyond the moment.
