Do You Promise?

Read Proverbs 20

Don’t trap yourself by making a rash promise to God and only later counting the cost.

Proverbs 20:25

God loves a cheerful giver—not a nervous, anxious giver. He delights in a promise or gift presented wholeheartedly to him. And who can blame him? God doesn’t need anything. It’s the love and commitment behind the gesture that God enjoys.

The ominous tone of this proverb is the warning to not disappoint God. “Rash” is a dramatic word choice, but it is appropriate. The proverb makes its point: Don’t rush into a vow that you haven’t thoroughly considered. Going back on your word isn’t wise. Instead, contemplate your promises before offering them to God. He takes you seriously. He doesn’t misplace your promise among the countless prayers he receives at any given moment.

If we pause to assess the motives and reasoning behind our gifts and promises to God, we will not have to fear the consequences. Then God will be at leisure to enjoy the love behind each one.

God doesn’t take our vows lightly.

Today, Lord, I will hold my tongue and contemplate what I have promised you. I don’t want you to ever doubt my integrity or my dedication to you.
