Divine Defender

Divine Defender

Read Proverbs 22

Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court. For the LORD is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.

Proverbs 22:22-23

His image cannot be found in the yellow pages or spread on the back of phone books. He will likely never tout a slogan on a billboard or bus. Don’t look for him to star in his own commercial. However, he is the most powerful personal injury attorney on the planet. He is the Lord. Don’t mess with him.

From cover to cover, the Bible makes it clear that God is especially interested in the poor and needy. Although biblical history is full of injustice against the afflicted, his message is still the same. He is their defender and will cause their foes to come to ruin. In contrast, our culture is generally complacent about the poor. They are often considered easy prey for robbery or exploitation in more than one sense. They are robbed of their dignity. They are exploited for their lack of resources. Yet God reserves special honor for them. How we ought to do the same!

A WORD FOR TODAY

God is offended by exploitation.

Today, Lord, make me sensitive to the poor and needy. Show me how I can share your special burden for them.
