Day Planner

Read Proverbs 16

We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.

Proverbs 16:9

This verse is not saying that we should make no plans. In fact, God says that wise people listen to others (12:15) and don’t just follow whatever path seems right (14:12). Surely God does not want us to sit idly, waiting for him to make things happen in our lives. We must make plans, get advice, think carefully, pray, weigh the pros and cons, and use our God-given brains to take steps forward in life.

The writer is reminding us of God’s complete sovereignty. As Paul made his plans to visit various countries in his ministry, at times God simply stood in the way and said “no” (Acts 16:6-10). The point is, we make our plans and hold them loosely, allowing God to intervene and make changes according to his will. What a wonderful promise! At no time do we ever need to fear that we will miss what God wants for us. As we move, he guides and directs.

A WORD FOR TODAY

God is in both the planning and the execution.

Lord, as I make my plans, help me to remember that you are sovereign. Wherever you want to take me is exactly where I should be.
