Read Proverbs 3

Don’t envy violent people or copy their ways.

Proverbs 3:31

At first glance, this proverb appears to be of little help. It’s unethical to be violent. Society condemns it. If we pause for a deeper look at Proverbs 3:31, however, we will see that it is actually a significant warning to Christians to not get sucked into sin.

The wisdom lying beneath the surface of this proverb warns us not to be jealous of power, fame, and possessions. Unfortunately, violent people can be rich, not only with money but with influence and reputation. While being violent is not a socially acceptable quality, having power, taking control, and demanding attention are very attractive ones. We may disapprove of the violence, but admire the perks that come with it.

Violence is a conspicuous sin, but envy brews quietly inside. Jealousy eventually wells up and spills out as action. The power you may desire convinces you to copy a “bad guy’s” tactics. This is how sin starts. God understands that, so he warns us clearly with this proverb. Sometimes we don’t know what we need to hear. Thankfully, God tells us anyway.
