Bribing God?

Read Proverbs 21

The LORD is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.

Proverbs 21:3

Consider the words of seventeen-year-old Heather: “When my folks were splitting up, they showered me with stuff, but what I really wanted and needed most was them. I would gladly trade all the gifts—even my car—to be close to them.”

Giving gifts to alleviate guilt is a common practice—and not just among divorcing parents. Often, people who know they’re not living as they should try to “make it up” to God through various religious gestures. In ancient times, this usually meant the sacrifice of a few extra animals. Now, it generally involves more time devoted to religious functions or a little something extra in the offering plate.

The Bible is clear. God cannot be “bought off.” He isn’t impressed by our “pseudo-devotion.” To ignore God Monday through Saturday and then expect him to be satisfied with a few extra bucks or a couple of hours of ritual on Sunday morning is the height of hypocrisy. God doesn’t want your stuff. He wants you—doing his will.

A WORD FOR TODAY

God can’t be bought off.

Today, Lord, you desire my genuine obedience, not my slick attempts at appearing holy. Keep me from the insidious sin of hypocrisy.
