Read Proverbs 17

Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.

Proverbs 17:24

Horse-drawn carriage rides in big cities are big business. After a delightful meal downtown, many tourists and even locals enjoy a lazy trip around the city sites. However, the setting itself is usually not so serene. Taxis screech to a halt. Buses lumber along with booming diesel engines. Pedestrians by the hundreds flood city walkways. Yet the animals seem to hardly notice the thoroughfare, blinded to the left and right by leather patches. Steadily they trod, centered on the road ahead.

Focus. That’s the difference between a fool and a sensible person. Fools are flighty. They may set their sights on one job or relationship for a while, but then their all-consuming efforts quickly dissipate. Easily distracted, they are soon on to the next thing. The ability to focus on what is truly important is essential to success. Like the carriage horse, we must fix our eyes—on Christ, the central point of our lives. He will safely guide us to success.
