Thirsting For God

O God, you are my God;

I earnestly search for you.

My soul thirsts for you;

my whole body longs for you

in this parched and weary land

where there is no water.

Psalm 63:1

Anyone who has ever been in the desert for a long time knows what thirst is like. Your mouth gets as dry as cotton, your throat hurts, and soon you begin imagining a tall, cold glass of water sparkling in the sun. Oh, how good it looks! You can almost taste it! David had experienced that kind of thirst when he stayed in the wilderness of Judah, a “parched and weary land where there is no water.” In this prayer, he compared that type of thirst with his desire for God. He was agonizing, searching for the Lord with all his might. His soul thirsted, and his body longed for God.

When have you longed for the Lord that way, so much that you actually thirst for him? During your time in prayer, express your desire for God.
