The Prayer Of An Elderly Man

The Prayer of an Elderly Man

Now that I am old and gray,

do not abandon me, O God.

Let me proclaim your power to this new generation,

your mighty miracles to all who come after me.

Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the highest heavens.

You have done such wonderful things.

Who can compare with you, O God?

You have allowed me to suffer much hardship,

but you will restore me to life again

and lift me up from the depths of the earth.

You will restore me to even greater honor

and comfort me once again.

Psalm 71:18-21

Whether our days on earth are few or many, God never abandons us. The writer of this psalm had lived a long life. In his old age, he felt abandoned by his friends and family. Yet in his despair, he turned to God, asking the Lord to never abandon him. As this man surveyed his life, he realized how God had worked through the hardships he had suffered and through the difficult circumstances of his life, and he wanted to tell the next generation how amazing God is.

Determine today to tell someone else about God’s wonderful deeds and pass on to the next generation stories of God’s greatness.

  • Dear Lord, you have done such wonderful things. Let me proclaim your power to this new generation . . .
