Recognizing God’s Greatness
Recognizing God’s Greatness
I know the greatness of the LORD—
that our Lord is greater than any other god.
The LORD does whatever pleases him
throughout all heaven and earth,
and on the seas and in their depths. . . .
Your name, O LORD, endures forever;
your fame, O LORD, is known to every generation.
For the LORD will give justice to his people
and have compassion on his servants.
Psalm 135:5-6, 13-14
What is greatness? The writer of Psalm 135 contrasted the greatness of the living God with the pagan gods that were worshipped at his time. Simply put, there is no comparison: “Our Lord is greater than any other god.” While other gods were thought to exercise control over different parts of creation (for instance, there was a rain god, a god of the seas, and so on), “the LORD does whatever pleases him throughout all heaven and earth.” He can do anything he wants. Yet God uses his power to help his people and provide them with all they need. He willingly answers those who call on him. What a loving and compassionate God!
Take some time today to meditate on the greatness of the Lord.
- Dear Lord, you indeed are great. Thank you for having compassion on me . . .
