Placing Our Hope In God

Sing out your thanks to the LORD;

sing praises to our God with a harp.

He covers the heavens with clouds,

provides rain for the earth,

and makes the grass grow in mountain pastures.

He gives food to the wild animals

and feeds the young ravens when they cry.

He takes no pleasure in the strength of a horse

or in human might.

No, the LORD’s delight is in those who fear him,

those who put their hope in his unfailing love.

Psalm 147:7-11

God isn’t impressed by the things that impress most people. People tend to value wealth, power, and prestige, while God is looking for those who depend on him and fear him. Psalm 147 was written after a group of Jews had returned from exile in Babylon. These people had learned the hard way that their true purpose was to fear God and submit to him. The psalmist in this prayer pointed out that all creation is dependent on God. God is the one who provides the rain. He allows the grass to grow. God himself gives food to the animals. Jesus later pointed out, “If God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you” (Luke 12:28).

In your prayer today acknowledge your dependence on God and thank him for providing for you.
